Head Coach / Coordinator, Athletic Development

Highland Community College is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Head Coach/Coordinator, Athletic Development to lead a competitive athletic program and support the growth of our student-athletes, coaches, and community partnerships. This full-time position plays a vital role in coaching, athletic operations, fundraising, and program development—while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment aligned with our Core Values of Integrity, Compassion, and Respect.

Key Responsibilities

Athletic Program Leadership & Coaching

  • Serve as Head Coach for the Men's Basketball team, including scheduling practices, coordinating travel, supervising student-athletes, compiling statistics, and maintaining program operations.
  • Recruit, select, organize, and prepare a competitive team of Highland student-athletes.
  • Teach sport techniques, rules, strategies, and sportsmanship, while promoting cooperation, work ethic, and personal responsibility.
  • Instruct up to three contact hours of physical education courses each semester.
  • Oversee equipment needs and coordinate regular maintenance.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director on the selection, supervision, and training of assistant coaches, support staff development across the athletic department.
  • Organize and supervise the College’s intramural program.
  • Participate in student learning assessment, program review, and departmental planning.
  • Serve as a mentor to coaches and provide professional development opportunities.
  • Act as backup to the AED Coordinator for the MERP Program.
  • Assist with event operations and game management as needed.

Athletic Development, Fundraising & Community Engagement

  • Lead fundraising campaigns, identify sponsorship opportunities, and maintain relationships with key donors.
  • Support the Athletic Director in securing external financial resources for athletic facility development and student-athlete enhancement.
  • Assist with alumni engagement, events, and athletic development initiatives.
  • Grow participation, retention, and annual revenue for Cougar Backers.
  • Represent the College as the primary liaison with BSN Sports.
  • Coordinate student-athlete volunteer opportunities to enhance community engagement.
  • Build relationships with local businesses and community organizations to support athletic outreach.
  • Assist with athletic social media accounts and the athletics website to ensure current and engaging content.

What We’re Looking For

Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree in physical education, athletic training, coaching, or a related field, and three (3) years of coaching experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge and skills.

Licensure/Certification

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator certification preferred within one year of hire.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of intercollegiate athletic programs, rules, and regulations.
  • Expertise in coaching techniques, teaching and learning principles, and physical education concepts.
  • Understanding of sports safety protocols, first aid, and strength/conditioning practices.
  • Ability to use data to support decision-making.
  • Proficiency with computers, software applications, and digital communication tools.
  • Strong skills in coaching, mentoring, event coordination, and relationship building.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Proven ability to build partnerships with alumni, donors, businesses, and community groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships across a diverse campus community.

Physical Requirements

  • Medium work: ability to exert up to 50 lbs. occasionally, 20 lbs. frequently, and 10 lbs. constantly.
  • Ability to work outdoors and in varying temperatures.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials (e.g., bloodborne pathogens).
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends as required.
  • Ability to travel to off-campus sites.
