Full-time Third Shift Custodian

CUSTODIAN
Full-Time, 3rd Shift


Highland Community College is accepting applications for a full-time custodian to work a total of 40 hours per week. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. High school diploma or equivalent required. Ability to work with minimal supervision required. Ability to read and write instructions required. Must have valid driver’s license. Custodial experience preferred. Must complete a successful criminal background check.

TITLE: Custodian

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains college facilities in a clean, sanitary and safe condition by performing a full range of custodial duties.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: (essential functions)

  • Cleans and maintains all types of floor surfaces by prescribed method or as directed. May operate power-driven floor stripping, waxing and polishing machine in buildings.
  • Responsible for the housekeeping activities in assigned areas and keeping the areas physically clean and ready for daily use.
  • Reports all problems and defects to immediate supervisor.
  • Follows safe work practices and procedures at all times, including safe lifting and completion and cleanup of all projects.
  • Keeps outside passage areas clean of litter and debris.
  • In accordance with the Risk Management Policy and Program:
  • Performs security patrols as assigned.
  • Inspects assigned building(s) for unsafe conditions.
  • Identifies and reports unsafe or emergency conditions to appropriate staff.
  • Responds to security calls.
  • Documents any security related issues/concerns identified during a shift.
  • Removes snow from College grounds.
  • May need to be available to work varied shifts or hours on short notice and available for overtime.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

Knowledge of cleaning and housekeeping practices and principles.

Knowledge of cleaning supplies, tools and equipment.

Knowledge of OSHA regulations, safe work practices and proper handling of chemicals.

Skill in operating cleaning tools and equipment.

Skill in observing health and safety regulations.

Skill in following oral and written directions.

Skill in basic math calculations.

Skill in working with minimal supervision.

Skill in operating power-driven floor stripping, waxing and polishing machine/s and shampoo machines and to use snow blower and shovel for the removal of snow.

Skill in operating computer hardware and software applications.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with co-workers and others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is routinely performed in office environments, as well as outside and occasionally subjected to adverse conditions. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, reaching above head, pushing and pulling, climbing, stooping and lifting, and pushing, pulling or carrying large or bulky objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Occasionally exposed to hazardous chemicals, blood borne pathogens and the potential for exposure to infectious diseases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent required, and prior cleaning/custodial experience preferred OR an equivalent combination of education and experience that provide the required knowledge and skills.

REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Valid Driver’s License.

SECURITY SENSITIVE POSITION: Requires a criminal background check.

REPORTS TO: Director, Facilities and Safety

APPOINTED BY: President.
